The aim of the PanViruShield project is to develop an objective, automatic and rapid diagnostic system for screening and identification of viral pathogens in humans and animals. The system will primarily be used during infectious disease emergencies such as pandemics caused by zoonoses or mutated human virus strains, suspected bioterrorist attacks, as well as a routine diagnostic tool. The project builds on propriety technology, enabling image analysis of virus particles in Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) images. The work involves development of new algorithms as well as refinement of existing methods and software for detection and identification of viruses in TEM images, based on virus particle shape and surface morphology.
